Dieter Schneider is a German Rotarian and IFMR member (International Fellowship of Motorcycling Rotarians). Following the death of his son from depression, Dieter funneled his grief into building awareness. From June 2018 to early 2020, he travelled around the world on his motorcycle sharing his story and raising awareness of depression and suicide. Dieter writes:- A year after my son took his own life after suffering from severe depression, I set off on a motorcycle to Cape Town, South Africa. The trip through East Africa was both a time to process trauma and fulfill a desire for adventure. My encounters with interesting people and my experiences on this fascinating continent healed my inner turmoil. When I arrived at the Cape of Good Hope, I made a life-changing decision. I wanted to get involved in mental health and suicide prevention. My club, the Rotary Club of Würzburg, Germany, supported me in a project that I called “Fellows Ride.” In June 2018, I started a ride around the world on a BMW 800 GS motorcycle. Even though I was driven by wanderlust and a thirst for adventure, this time I also had a mission. I wanted to shift attention off of myself and build awareness for the insidious disease of depression. See: Motorcycle ride raises awareness of depression | Rotary Voices |

The Squamish Windsports Society is a non-profit society providing sailors with access to a high wind sailing location where the Squamish River meets Howe Sound. Squamish has more high performance sailing days than most other places in North America. Sunshine and steady wind provide ideal conditions for kiteboarding and windsurfing here in beautiful British Columbia. The plan to remove land access to the Spit creates the exact scenario the Howe Sound Economic forum sought to avoid. If sections of The Spit road are removed without alternative land access (such as the proposed realignment via 3rd Ave), the pressure placed on existing locations like Oceanfront will be immense. A better solution is possible, one which was originally proposed by the SRWS which would preserve access to the Spit while supporting the habitats of salmons and other wildlife in the area. That solution isn’t possible if this project goes ahead this year in the manner currently planned by the Watershed Society and the DFO. more info: www.realignnotremove.ca website: www.squamishwindsports.com |

The SRWS formed in 1998 with a holistic approach towards watershed restoration. To date our organization has assessed over 144 watercourses in the Squamish and Lillooet River watersheds and restored thousands of metres of habitat for salmon and other wildlife. In 2005 the SRWS expanded our operations to include and education outreach program that engages over 600 students annually in outdoor experiential learning. The work the SRWS undertakes looks at the headwaters in the upper watershed all the way down to the estuary and into Howe Sound and includes scientific and state of the art methodology and monitoring programs. In the mid-1990's the SRWS worked closely with the forest industry as part of the Forest Renewal BC Watershed Restoration Program and then in the early 2000's the restoration focused more on salmon habitat and restoring estuarine function. Throughout our years of operations we have maintained strong partnerships with Squamish Nation and through this partnership have been able to restore salmon habitat in the upper Elaho River, along the Cheakamus, and throughout the traditional territory of Squamish Nation. |

Join Mike Schauch as he shares his story of finding love and truth in the lost valley of the Himalaya. In 2012, Michael Schauch and his wife, Chantal, undertook an expedition deep in the Himalaya of northern Nepal, into a remote valley that had been closed off to outsiders for decades. They led a team of artists (a photographer, a musician, and a painter), with the objective of capturing a moment in time through their unique lenses. As a mountaineering fanatic, Mike had a second dream - to climb an unknown mountain he had only identified through a photograph. What unfolded in the mountains forced him to question his values and his own identity, and eventually resulted in meeting a little girl, which was the most profound encounter of his life. Little did either know that from that moment they would completely change the trajectory of each other’s life. Read about Mike Stauch's story and his book A Story of Karma.. Read the article in the Squamish Chief. Mike is a mountaineer, entrepreneur and storyteller who lives to explore remote places around the world and to share the depth and beauty of human connection he discovers along the way. With early success as an entrepreneur at age 15, and over 20 years of global financial investment experience, Mike brings his business acumen and altruistic heart to lead and support local and international mentorship, fundraising and educational initiatives. He holds an MBA from Queen’s University and is a member of the Explorers Club. He and his partner in adventure Chantal make their base camp in Squamish, BC. |
