2008/09 International Proposed Projects
Posted by Janet Gugins
This year's theme is "Making Dreams Real" to end child mortality. What better way than through the projects listed below.
On Thursday Sept 4th, our club voted on a number of worthy international projects. The results will be announced at the Sept 11th meeting and the top 2 projects will be showcased at the November 22nd Fundraiser.
Honduran Market Kids $1,800
Offers education to kids who would otherwise hang out in the markets while their parents work. This is a project we have supported over the last 2 years. With matching grants our $1,800 becomes close to $18,000.
Playgrounds for Hope $6,000
In war, children are innocent casualties. Playground Builders facilitates the construction of playgrounds in war torn regions such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Palestinian Territories. Locals are empowered through a tendering process to build playgrounds, supplying jobs, pride and dignity. The playground becomes a community-gathering place for children and adults. Bed Nets - Malaria Prevention for Tanzania $2,000
Malaria is the number one killer of children in Africa. The distribuion of mosquito bed nets to boarding schools, hospitals, and homes helps prevent this disease.
Polio Plus $2,000
Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradication of this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all. Our contributions will help Rotary match a $100 million challenge grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting 2 million dollars will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries where polio continues to infect and paralyze children.
Nurse for Guatemala Medical Centre Under $3,000
The Rotary Club of Michigan is applying for a matching grant with the newly chartered Rotary Club in Barrillas close to Nueva Eden. We have asked them to include funding for a nurse for one year.
